From Canon Europe:
“When the husband of a Bosnian, Indian or Ugandan woman dies she becomes an outcast.” Photojournalist Amy Toensing gives an emotional insight into the stories of Hindu widows. Dedicating four years to telling the stories of these women, she documents the difficulty they face, but also how many women are now pushing back – dressing in bright colours, wearing jewellery and stepping out of the shadows.”
“The idea for the project, called Widowhood, came to Amy in 2005 while she was travelling in Nepal. Making a detour to India, where in some communities widows are expected to spend the rest of their lives in mourning, she met and photographed women who had been stigmatised after the deaths of their husbands, and the project’s seeds were sown.”
